Regarding the downside mentioned by "VFARRR":
You can buy a reduced TOUR ticket for motorcycles: it includes a day
ticket for the Grossglockner, Gerlos and Nockalm Road and entitles
the holder to a reduced ticket for the Villach Alpine Road
(EUR 7.00 instead of 10.00). Available for EUR 34.00 at the
individual cashpoints and in advance for EUR 30.00 at ÖAMTC,
ARBÖ and ADAC offices.
Beside this: it is a wonderful road and one of the most famous alpine road leads
you into the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park, to the highest mountain in
Austria, the Grossglockner (3,798m) and its glacier,
the Pasterze. Just the hard facts: 48 kilometres of high alpine road
with 36 bends, and an altitude ascent to 2,504 metres
I love it :)
The main downside to this route is the exorbitant entry fee of 25 euros. Also there is plenty of traffic and the road is slippery near the peak.
The actual ride seems to be over far too quickly. But the scenery here is unique. So make the most of it by exploring on foot, I walked the glacier walk (less than an hour each way before the trail gets rough) there are heaps of deer and some odd looking cat sized rats (marmots) that appear if no one is around.

A Must Do when in Austria. A very good road for riders of all abilities. A good road surface with the carriageway wider than your average high mountain pass. Keep an eye on the weather as it is high and not much fun in wet cloud or even snow. Yes, snow is a possibility even in summer so check the forecast.Very popular with all forms of transport and coaches, motor homes etc are not uncommon. Not a problem on a bike as there are plenty of safe overtaking opportunities.Take care at Bikers Point if the road surface is wet as the road is mostly a type of cobble, is steep, narrow and has a few hairpins.At the top of The GroÃƒÅ¸glockner there is a dedicated Bike Park with equipment lockers. Just watch out for cars exiting the car park as you access the Bike Park.Allow plenty of time as the scenery is stunning and take advantage to the free information map given at the Toll Booth to experience the h istory and culture.
Did it in Aug 2010, unforgettable ride, incredible scenery & biker friendly. They build it to create jobs back then after the world war and it goes up to 2500 m. It's in the National Park Hohe Tauern and the whole region is my favorite area to ride. (see other sections in same area) For sleeping try Heilengblut or Winklern.
Rode this route at during the last week of July 2011, amazing scenery and spectacular views. As it was 8 O'clock in the evening traffic was almost non existent, unlike the snow, which was ploughed into banks at the side of the road. Although it was July it freezing cold, and where the ploughed snow had melted during the day we were unsure at the time if it was water or ice we were riding across! In general the road surface is good, and the bends are predictable, with non of the stop start nature of some passes.
In terms of spectacular views and biker friendliness, this road is one of the best. The environment is simply breathtaking and the Austrian Alpine views amazing. The road is also good with many hairpins but can be quite busy, I rode this at 7am on Sunday morning in high season and there was nearly no one about when I started, but about one hour later there were already many cars, bikers and cyclists so I think it would be very busy at times. The pass opens at 5am though so if you really want to miss the traffic you can!
We rode this route in July 2011, on the first day it snowed and rained which is no fun on this road. The second day we did it the sun was out and it was a totaly different feeling and enjoyment. I was riding a FJR1300 and my mate was on his Busa we had a great time. The final streach up to Bikers Point was really busy with cars and cyclists which slowed everyone up. Personnaly I think it is over hyped as there better routes which are more challenging and with less traffic. This is the 5th time I have done this road and the last. My new favourite is Silvio Pass in the Italian Dolomite Region, this is much more challenging. The scenary is better and it is FREE!
We alos got pissed off with a lot of Bikers treating it as racetrack putting themselves and others at risk and we had to pay 19 Euros toll fee!!

I'm lucky enough to get to ride it several times a year, and not to have to pay the toll! It's a "must do" ride, if you go in July/August get up early and do it before the rush. And watch out for the cyclists, they go very fast downhill. Check the weather forecasts first as you can get snow at any time of the year. The road can also be closed for special events, check the website-the German version-they don't often bother to put the closure notices on the English version!
Not much to add about the road itself except that every motorcyclist should ride it at least once.

Amazing to go through a tunnel at that height. Well worth doing - we had brilliant weather, but my brother told me of fog and cold rain up there even in the middle of summer. There was snow next to the road!
Blindingly good, a steep 18 Euros toll for bikes but specially pprinted information booklet specifically for bikers included (in German).

One of the best roads Ive ever ridden, the scenery is amazing and the road is marvelous.
Despite being a toll road, the price is adequate and the infrastructures provided along the route are good. You can also get a one-day voucher for the road by staying in some hotels nearby, like in Heiligenblut.
Best time to visit is June, when its not so full. You might get a chance to see some test vehicles along the route, as some German and Italian constructors do tests here.
This would be a great route if it werent for the high amount of traffic on it. Its been turned into a major tourist atraction of the wrong sort. The southern part of this is quite nice. Actually up on the mountain however you will need a bike with some umf due to all the cars, campers and tour busses. Ive seen it, done it and shall never return. Ive heard that about 100 miles south in Italy is much nicer.
Yep, Grossglockner is an absolute marvel among Alp passes. You will find all sorts of bends here and the tarmac is fabulous. So are the views (if you can find the time...).
I have already been there 3 times but I will be coming back again & again. And again & again. And then again. And then some more!
I agree with Stelios, it was my first Alpine pass back in 1990 and since then it stayed in my mind for good. Back then, as I was descenting towards Lienz I stopped so many times and sat down with the cows just feeling the surrunding. Looking forward to fullfil the idea of a trip with most of the famous and remote Alpine passes, its ready for some years but need free time for that unfortunately but it will come.
Driven back at 2005 it was my first pass that made me alpihololic ;) After driven some more passes, i still believe this one is one of my favorites. You never forget the first time ;P

One of the greatest roads, anywhere. Because it's a toll road, and fairly expensive, too, the maintenance is exceptional. The road surface is excellent and there are few hazards. Despite the amount of corners, the road seems laid out for safety - good visibility through hairpins, and the radius (radii?) of all corners are sufficient to maintain some speed and be comfortable. The only risk I found, in May, was that snowmelt resulted in small streams crossing the otherwise dry road, usually right in the hairpins at the point of greatest lean. I rode it mid-week and was never impeded by any other vehicles. There is a special line on entering the road for motorcyclists, so you don't have to wait in the lineup of cars paying the toll.
Built in the 1930's, this high-alpine panorama route the most beautiful setting makes for great riding in one of the highest areas of the Austrian alps.
Fantastic scenery, and the highest pass in Austria. Open May to November. Can be busy - so probably best to avoid at weekends. Very popular with bikers, but cars too. You need a head for heights and have to like hairpins too. Some nice fast stretches too. Very few hazards except the road itself: the 29 hairpin bends. Visibility is good though, and there are hardly any side roads. Jusat watch out for people gawping at the scenery. 360 views from the Edelweissspitze - stop for food and a beer there as well. It is a toll road though. Euro 17 for a day/ Euro 30 for a 30 day pass. Their stated aim is to be the most biker friendly pass in the Alps! More info here www.grossglockner.at
