Took this route this weekend. Road is mostly in good condition, however there is construction between Dinsmore and Bridgeville. Pavement is torn up but surfaced is hard packed and passable with caution.
Rode 36 both ways in the last week. Great road, currently in excellent shape with only a few blemishes. Little traffic this time of year, but almost every car we came up on has pulled to the side to let us pass! Gas is available in Platina CA, but expensive @ 5.09/gallon.
This is surely one of Californias best motorcycling roads. Simply fantastic and addictive corners that keep on coming!
Fantastic ride. I just rode it for the first time a few weeks ago on my 2004 MV Agusta Brutale. It was still a bit cold, with a good bit of snow still on the ground at the higher elevations, but the road was clear. Watch out for gravel in some of the tight turns at high elevations. Also on a bike with limited range (only about 110 miles for the Brutale) plan your gas stops carefully! We filled up in Red Bluff, and had to make one fuel stop on 36 about halfway - would not have made it to Fortuna on one tank.
A wonderful selection of great corners over this, undoubtedly one of the best roads in this area. The turns just keep on coming and the scenary is great mostly. Great for practicing your skills.
